SUMMER 2006 SHOPPING LIST
a.k.a.
stuff I want, but can't afford
a.k.a.
being bored at work makes me want to consume

CAR

Ugh. I need a vehicle. Ive been saving up for a while. And I don't really know what I want. I was dead set for a long time on getting a van. A Chevy Astro or a GMC Safari. I mostly want them so that I can
transport (A) alot of equipment or (B) alot of people. From the get go, my dad was opposed to the idea, which sucks, because the only way I'm going to afford a decent car is with his help. His excuse is that these vans are 6 cylinder, and not fuel efficient. He has a point. Now that I have been driving alot this summer, I understand, and I don't feel like paying tons of gas money just to get back n forth to work on days when I'm not going to have equipment or passengers. So I started looking into hatchback type cars like a Volkswagen Golf, or a Honda Matrix. Much more fuel efficient. Much less space. Maybe it's impractical, but I just like the idea of being able to get most of/all of my band's gear to a show in one shot, or being able to go to Six Flags with a bunch of kids from Purchase, and not having to take multiple cars. Maybe I can find a deal on a soccer-mom-minivan or something.

APPLE MACBOOK

The jury is in. When I was buying a new computer, not too long ago, I should have gone with a Mac. My PC is pretty good, but a Mac just would have been better. Most of the work I do on the computer is design oriented, I am not a programmer or hacker, and I don't play computer games. So all the reasons why one should opt for a PC do not apply to me. If I had bought a Mac desktop, then I could get an inexpensive PC laptop for general simple portable use. That would have been the smart way to go. Since I did not do that, I will do the opposite. I already have a strong PC, that I can use as my workhorse, so I want to buy one of the less expensive MacBooks for my portable needs.

MP3 PLAYER

Damn techie decisions. My first iPod screwed me big time, so I am reluctant to buy another one, though I do really like them. I have found a strong alternative though, in the Creative Zen Vision. A little bigger and more expensive than an ipod, but much more video features and what not. Only problem? If I buy a MacBook, I get a Nano for free, or $179 towards an iPod. The iPod then becomes quite appealing again. Either way, I'm really f'n sick of carrying a CD player with a bunch of CD's around. I take the bus several days a week, when I'm not taking the bus, I'm driving to work, and I take the train often for Improv Class in the city. I need a some freakin music.

SMARTPHONE/PDA

This is a bit of a pipedream. But it also may solve several problems. I want a phone that has a keyboard and more features than my current crap phone. Now, there are some smartphones that offer video as well as MP3 playback. If I could get one with a big enough file capacity, it could conceivable eliminate my need for an MP3 player. Also, some have moble internet access, which would let me check my email, create simple documents, IM people, etc. Which could then also conceivably eliminate my need for a laptop. Having all that in my pocket? Quite appealing. However, the plan my family is on is just about as simple as my phone is, and changing it could be quite an ordeal, that could ultimately cost me a bunch of money.

RECORDING HARDWARE
This might be compatable with the MacBook, which comes with GarageBand. Also, I have Adobe Audition on my PC. I'm not looking to cut gold records - all I want to do is be able to record my own stuff when I think of it, and not on a tape recorder.

DESK
My room is a pretty big mess. And I am still working at the desk my brother and I had when we were in elementary school. Luckily we didn't grow much. I'd like to buy a new desk that will make my room a little bit easier to organize, and eliminate some of the clutter.

I will now be taking donations for the buy Chopper cool crap fund.

i have a creative zen and it is amazing! the best purchase i've ever made, i love this thing. if you're used to itunes, i admit it takes a little getting used to, but it is a really strong great mp3 player, and doesn't tie you to a brand like apple does. it supports many more formats than apple as well, basically the only thing is can't play is mp4s (which are itunes only). i have tons of videos on mine that i wouldn't be able to see on an ipod, the battery lost longer in one sitting as well as over it's lifetime. an indepth look:

i am SOOOO glad i can talk to someone who has one. ive been a little reluctant to jump in and buy one, without getting an objective opinion. one of the setbacks IS that with an ipod, my itunes setup and playlist will be easily uploaded, but i just really want to try something other than ipod. question: ive never seen a zen vision in person - is it small enough to be somewhat easily portable?

yeah it's like the same size as an ipod - a tiny bit thicker and heavier. but it fits into the back pocket (or even front pocket) of your jeans. it's really almost the same exact size as an ipod.
